Activities in the Gemfields

When you come for a shorter stay, just go and visit one of the many walk-in mines and fossicking parks in Rubyvale or Sapphire. There you’ll have a lot of fun and you can learn how to discover gemstones. Buckets full of miners supply of Sapphire-bearing are washed for a modest fee, and you can learn how to recognize and discover Sapphires by sieving the gravel wash.

If you want to stay for a longer period of time or check out more adventurous experiences, there are many areas where fossicking is permitted. The government allowed for the search of gemstones on three large areas of Sapphire-bearing ground in 1986, to be used for touristic and recreational purposes. Visitors are required, though, to buy a license with information and area maps at a modest fee.

The main method used for fossicking is by picking and digging into the sapphire-bearing gravel, and this can be a pretty exhausting activity depending on how hard you work, but also ‘Specking’ is rather popular. With specking, you’re looking for sapphires at the surface which can be quite rewarding, particularly after it has rained.

The area has several galleries, gem shops, and jewelers, particularly in Sapphire and Rubyvale. Here you can purchase your dream Gem, or when you’re lucky and come with your own piece, you can go to a local Gem cutter to facet the stone a,d a jeweler can set your Gem into a very valuable piece of art that can be treasured until eternity.
